A VERY LATE CHRISTMAS AND THE MITTEN POST.

During DEcember we worked on the mitten story and of course THE POLAR EXPRESS was our Christmas theme.

The Mitten is one of my favorite winter stories and it is excellent for drama with ESL.

We started by telling the story and analyzing its characters, settings and parts.

 The story became part of the School Christmas Festival so we needed to practice

THE MITTEN READ THE ROOM: A LITERACY ACTIVITY
This was our first read the room activity and we looved it

As you can imagine from my blog name my favorite children book of all time is THE POLAR EXPRESS. I was excited to work with my kiddos on this book. I always wait till they are five because I think they can understand and enjoy the story better.

As most teachers do when telling this story the best way to do it is in a train... so we have a train conductor giving tickets and kids ready to listen and enjoy,

We told thr story and then Amalio, the janitor, came to our class to tell us that somebody had brought a parcel for us, and it was really cold when we touched it.

kids draw their favorite part of the story and most of them draw the janitor bringing the bells. Aww

These are pictures of the last day of school before Christmas break where Santa Claus, the Three wise men and Olentzero came to visit the children.

THE MITTEN part ll TABLE TIME ACTIVITIES

 After retelling and analyzing the story we completed a story map where we draw the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of the story,

 We did a very simple coloring activity to recognize the names of the animals and then we copy their names.

 

These are two of the math activities we have been doing this week: a counting and adding activity and a cool mitten size activity from HOMESCHOOL CREATIONS

We  graph left and right mittens on the board to later on do it at table time.

THE MITTEN IN 5 years C

Hello there!
We have been working a lot these days with the Mitten Story.
It is a great story to practice speaking with the kids as they love retelling the story and it can be simplified easily. 

1st we READ THE STORY and they enjoyed it very much.
Then we completed a story graph just as in THE FIRST GRADE PARADE.  Amazing work!!

They understood the idea pretty well so I am really happy with the activity.

We learned the names of the animal, used an animal book to find information about them and we described them. Then we placed them in our Mitten Bulletin board.

We retold the story using a foam mitten with cardboard animals and we also created our own mittens to retell the stories on  our own. 

We roleplayed the story becoming the animals and getting inside of a big blanket. The audience helped me retell the story and the animals said a simple line: "What a lovely mitten, i will get in"

We graphed our favorite mitten animals, Hedgehog was the winner probably because sonic is an hedgehog... and my kiddos are amazed by sonic.
